Street Food and African cuisine are two of 2017's top food trends. Join me in the kitchen for a fun cookbook series with three of my favorite books on these topics: The Soul of a New Cuisine - a discovery of the foods and flavors of Africa by Marcus Samuelsson, Pok Pok by Andy Ricker and Lucky Rice by Danielle Chang. We'll make Korean, Thai and Mexican street food using our local Bucks County ingredients. And we'll take a deep dive into the spice world exploring the flavors of Northern Africa.
March 2nd and 23rd - Bibimbap is classic Korean goodness, rice and varied vegetables in a bowl. It's a great addition to your culinary repertoire and is easy enough to make for anyone just beginning to get their cooking legs under them. We'll use the recipe in Lucky Rice as a jumping off point. We'll also enjoy a Thai style Ice Cream Sandwich, a street food favorite like you've never had, from Pok Pok. I enjoyed this dish when I dined at the restaurant in New York and it made quite an impression on me.
March 9th - The Soul of a New Cuisine by Marcus Samuelsson covers ALL of Africa and is a complete education in the varied components of the cuisine. The diversity of the regions is fun and fascinating. We'll look at the spices found across all of Africa but take a deep dive into the Northern Africa region with Chicken with Lemon and Olives and Cous Cous spiced with Baharat.
March 16th and 30th - Tacos! You'll learn how to make fresh tacos using local stone ground corn and wheat. It's easier than you think and the flavor payoff is so worth the effort. We'll make some traditional Mexican street tacos and also put an Asian food truck spin on it with Kimchi Tacos from Lucky Rice. The taco making part of this class will be hands on.
All classes start at 7pm, last approximately two hours, are $40 each and have 4 seats available. Most of each class is demonstration style but there is usually at least one element that will be hands on. To reserve your seat, email me @ chefkellyunger@gmail.com.
